Polysulfide Sealant

Polysulfide sealant is a type of sealing material made with liquid polysulfide rubber as the main base material, combined with additives such as vulcanizing agents, reinforcing agents, and tackifiers.
Classified by component, polysulfide sealants can be divided into two-component and one-component types:
Two-component polysulfide sealant is formulated from liquid polysulfide rubber, metal oxides, and other substances. It has self-adhesive properties and excellent joint-filling and water-stopping capabilities.
One-component polysulfide sealant, on the other hand, takes liquid polysulfide rubber as the main base material and is made by combining it with tackifying resins, vulcanizing agents, and other additives.
Polysulfide sealant can also be referred to as: Polysulfide Sealant Compound, Polysulfide Rubber Sealant, Liquid Polysulfide Sealant, Polysulfide-Based Sealant, Polysulfide or Polythioether Sealant Compositions, etc.

Product Advantage

◆◆ Polysulfide sealant is a high-performance elastomeric sealing material, with its main characteristics including:

1. Excellent Weather Resistance and Durability: It can maintain stable performance for a long time and is not prone to cracking.

2. Good Adhesion: It has strong adhesive force to various materials such as concrete and steel, and can be firmly bonded to the surface.

3. Outstanding Waterproof Performance: It adopts a dual sealing and water-stopping mechanism—elastic water-stopping of rubber itself and volume expansion water-stopping when in contact with water—and can resist a water pressure of 1.5 MPa.

4. Resistance to Chemical Medium Corrosion: It can withstand corrosion from chemicals like hydrochloric acid, brine, sodium carbonate, and potassium hydroxide.

5. Environmental Friendliness: As an eco-friendly product, it can be in contact with drinking water, featuring safety and non-toxicity.

6. Convenient Construction: Being a one-component colloid, it can be applied using standard joint sealant construction methods.

7. High Cost-Effectiveness: Its performance is superior to that of traditional construction joint waterproof materials (such as steel-edged rubber waterstops or waterstop strips), while its price is moderate.

8. Self-Leveling Property: When the two components of the self-leveling two-component polysulfide sealant are mixed, a cross-linking reaction occurs to form a cured product, which can cure at room temperature.

9. Non-Sagging Property: The non-sagging two-component polysulfide sealant can well fill the joints without contaminating or corroding the sealed components.

To sum up, with its unique properties and advantages, polysulfide sealant has been widely used in fields such as construction, transportation, and water conservancy.

Product Uses

◆◆ Application Scope of Polysulfide Sealant

1. Civil and Construction Field: Polysulfide sealant is suitable for the waterproof sealing of insulated glass, joints of metal and concrete curtain walls, underground projects (such as tunnels and culverts), reservoirs, water storage tanks and other structures. It is also used for the expansion sealing of expansion joints in highway pavements, airport runways, etc., as well as the repair and restoration sealing of building cracks.

2. Automotive Manufacturing Field: Polysulfide sealant can be used for the waterproof and anti-rust protection of welds on the chassis and exterior of the carriage. It is also applied to the bonding and sealing of joints between materials such as metal, wood, plastic and foam in ceilings, compartments and floors, as well as the waterproof and anti-rust sealing of fixing screws and rivets on metal plates.

3. Petrochemical Field: Polysulfide sealant is suitable for the anti-corrosion sealing of oil storage tanks for various fuels (gasoline, coal oil, diesel) and the sealing of chemical product storage tanks.

4. Electronics and Electrical Appliances Field: Polysulfide sealant can be used for the sealing of glass doors of refrigerators and freezers.

Product Operate Guide

◆◆ I. Application Method of Two-Component Polysulfide Sealant

1. Preparation Before Construction

- Check whether Components A and B are expired, and if there is any sedimentation, caking, or delamination.

- Remove oil stains, dust, loose particles, and old sealant from the joint surface using a wire brush, sandpaper, or solvent. Ensure the substrate surface is completely dry, with a humidity of ≤ 85%.

- Sand rough surfaces such as concrete to increase the bonding area. For substrates with high water absorption or smooth surfaces (e.g., metal, glass), apply a special primer to enhance adhesion.

- The construction environment temperature should be between 5℃ and 35℃. Avoid construction in rainy days or high-humidity environments.

2. Mixing Ratio

- Mix Components A and B strictly according to the ratio provided by the manufacturer (common ratios are 10:1 or 1:1), with an error not exceeding ±5%.

- Use an electronic scale for accurate weighing. If mechanical stirring is adopted, a low-speed electric stirrer is recommended: stir at 300-500 rpm for 2-3 minutes to ensure uniformity without color difference. If manual stirring is used, a scraper can be used to stir in the same direction until the color is consistent, which takes about 5 minutes.

- After stirring, let the mixture stand for 2-3 minutes to eliminate bubbles.

3. Construction Operation

- Fill the bottom of the joint with a closed-cell foam rod to control the depth of the sealant and save dosage.

- Load the mixed sealant into a glue gun, install a special nozzle, and adjust the nozzle cut angle according to the joint shape. Squeeze the glue gun at a constant speed to fill the joint with the sealant, which should be slightly higher than the surface to form a convex shape. Alternatively, a scraper can be used to smooth the sealant in one direction along the joint at a 45° angle to expel air and form a smooth surface.

- Immediately after glue injection, trim the surface with a scraper dipped in acetone.

◆◆ II. Application Method of One-Component Polysulfide Sealant

1. Preparation Before Construction

- The construction environment temperature should be between 5℃ and 35℃, with a relative humidity not exceeding 85%. Construction is prohibited on rainy days or when there is condensation on the substrate surface.

- Prepare tools and materials such as a putty knife, glue injection gun, brush, acetone solvent, and polyethylene foam strip.

- Clean dust, oil stains, and other impurities from the substrate surface to ensure it is dry and flat. For metal substrates, remove rust with a wire brush; for aluminum alloy surfaces, use a special cleaning agent to remove the oxide layer; for concrete substrates, use an angle grinder to grind off the laitance layer and expose fresh aggregates.

- Thoroughly clean debris inside expansion joints. For gaps with a depth exceeding 15 mm, fill them with polyethylene foam strips, leaving a 5-8 mm space from the surface for glue injection.

2. Glue Application Operation

- Use the sealant immediately after opening to avoid prolonged exposure to air.

- Determine the size of the nozzle cut according to the size of the construction joint. Load the one-component polysulfide sealant into the glue gun, and evenly apply the sealant onto the construction joint along the direction of the joint.

3. Trimming and Curing

- Immediately after glue injection, trim the surface with a scraper dipped in acetone to form an arc-shaped cross-section that is slightly higher in the middle.

- The sealant requires 7 days for complete curing. Avoid contact with water or chemical solvents within the first 72 hours. The surface drying time is approximately 4-6 hours, during which the sealant should not be touched.

- For winter construction, it is recommended to use a heat gun for auxiliary curing, with the temperature controlled below 40℃.
